What is a Linux VPS?

A Linux VPS is a virtual machine with dedicated CPU, RAM and NVMe storage, running a Linux distribution you have root on. RDPForge Linux VPS plans start at $5.00/month for 1 vCPU, 2 GB RAM and 30 GB NVMe, include a dedicated IPv4 and free DDoS protection, and are delivered automatically about four minutes after payment.

Five sizes, no licence tax

Same nodes as our Windows fleet, minus the Microsoft licence and the 2 GB of desktop overhead — which is exactly why they cost 25-35% less.

Real workloads

What our Linux fleet actually runs

Ranked by how often we see it, with the plan our support team would recommend.

Web applications

VPS Micro → Boost

Nginx or Caddy in front of Node, Go, Python, PHP or Rails, with Postgres and Redis beside it. A Compose stack of app + database + cache + proxy fits comfortably in 4 GB.

$ curl -fsSL https://get.docker.com | sh
$ docker compose up -d

Databases

VPS Power → Titan

PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB, ClickHouse. NVMe in RAID-10 with power-loss protection means fsync is fast and WAL flushes are not the bottleneck.

$ apt install postgresql-16
$ pgbench -c 50 -T 60   # 4,180 tps on Boost

VPN & privacy

VPS Nano

WireGuard, OpenVPN, Outline or a Tailscale exit node. One vCPU saturates a gigabit port. $5/month for a personal exit in any of 15 countries.

$ apt install wireguard
$ wg-quick up wg0

CI/CD runners

VPS Titan

GitHub Actions self-hosted runners, GitLab runners, Woodpecker. Dedicated cores and no shared-tenancy throttling, at roughly a third of hyperscaler pricing.

$ ./config.sh --url https://github.com/org --token ***
$ ./svc.sh install && ./svc.sh start

Game servers

VPS Boost → Power

Minecraft, Rust, CS2, Valheim, Palworld. Free L3/L4 DDoS filtering matters more here than anywhere else, and it is included.

$ docker run -d -p 25565:25565 itzg/minecraft-server

Self-hosting everything

VPS Boost

Nextcloud, Vaultwarden, Immich, Jellyfin, n8n, Coolify. 120 GB of NVMe and 8 GB of RAM runs a genuinely useful personal cloud.

$ curl -fsSL https://get.coolify.io | bash

Built the way you would build it

  • SSH public key injected at build time — password auth off from the start
  • cloud-init user-data field for a fully scripted first boot
  • Nested virtualisation (KVM inside KVM) on every plan
  • Custom ISO up to 8 GB, bootable from the HTML5 VNC console
  • Free IPv6 /64 on request, rolling out fleet-wide during 2026
  • Snapshots in 30-90 seconds, no downtime

Linux VPS FAQ

Questions specific to Linux

Yes. Every Windows plan ships with the built-in Administrator account and every Linux plan with root. You can install any software, add users, change the RDP port, run Docker, edit the registry and reinstall the OS from the control panel whenever you want. We never install agents or monitoring software inside your instance.

Yes. CPU, RAM and bandwidth upgrades apply after a single reboot and take about 60 seconds. Disk can be grown online with no reboot on Linux and with one reboot on Windows. Upgrades are prorated to the day, so you only pay the difference for the time remaining on your term. Downgrades are applied at your next renewal.

AMD EPYC 7003/9004 and Intel Xeon Gold Scalable nodes with DDR4/DDR5 ECC memory and enterprise NVMe in RAID-10, virtualised with KVM. Nodes are provisioned to a maximum 3:1 vCPU ratio on shared plans and 1:1 on Titan and Ultra plans. Typical single-thread Geekbench 6 scores land between 1,650 and 1,980 depending on the location.

Layer 3 and layer 4 DDoS filtering is included free on every plan in every location, with mitigation capacity up to 1.5 Tbps at the edge. Attacks are detected and scrubbed automatically within about 10 seconds. Application-layer (layer 7) filtering with custom rules is an optional $6/month add-on.

Custom ISOs up to 8 GB are supported on all Linux and Windows plans through the VNC console. Nested virtualisation (running Hyper-V, VMware or KVM inside your instance) is enabled on Pro, Elite, Ultra, Power and Titan plans; on the smaller shared plans it is disabled to protect node stability.

Spam, phishing, malware distribution and command-and-control, credential stuffing, DDoS origination, child sexual abuse material, and any traffic that gets our IP ranges blacklisted are strictly prohibited and terminated without refund. Port 25 is closed by default and opened on request after a short review. Everything else that is legal in the server's jurisdiction is fine, including VPNs, scraping within a site's terms, trading bots and game servers.
