How to size a custom Windows RDP or Linux VPS
Most people over-buy CPU and under-buy memory. These are the numbers our support team actually uses when someone asks us to size a machine for them — free, by ticket, if you would rather we did it.
Memory is the binding constraint
A freshly booted Windows Server 2022 with the desktop experience uses about 2 GB doing nothing; Debian 12 minimal uses roughly 180 MB. That is why we do not sell Windows below 4 GB. Budget 2 GB per concurrent desktop user on top of the OS, 1.5 GB per MT5 terminal, and about 700 MB per headless Chromium instance.
CPU matters less than you think
A trading terminal with live charts uses 2-6% of one modern core. A web app serving moderate traffic rarely saturates two. Buy cores for compilation, video encoding, tick-level backtesting and CI — not for “headroom”. Half a vCPU per active desktop user is a safe planning figure.
Disk: Windows needs a floor
Windows Server occupies 45-50 GB before you install anything and grows with updates, so 60 GB is the practical minimum and 120 GB the comfortable one. Linux is happy on 30 GB unless you are storing data. Tick history, container images and logs are what actually fill a disk — a year of M1 forex data across 20 symbols is 15-20 GB on its own.
When a plan beats a custom build
Almost always. The builder is priced from published per-unit rates, and the packaged plans sit 8-20% below the equivalent build — a 4 vCPU / 8 GB / 120 GB Linux build is $19.40 while VPS Boost is $17.00. Build custom when the ratio is unusual: lots of RAM and few cores, or a large disk on a small instance.
