# Plan Docker on a Linux VPS

Check distribution compatibility, resources, network access and recovery for your containers.

## Choose the Linux configuration

Confirm that the chosen distribution and version support the Docker release you intend to install. Size memory, storage and CPU for the actual containers and their data.

## Control privileges and exposure

Use the installation instructions for that distribution. Treat access to the Docker daemon as privileged and expose only the application ports needed. Do not paste unreviewed installation commands from an unknown source.

## Back up persistent data

Document volumes, secrets and configuration separately from disposable container images. Keep an independent backup and test recovery before depending on the service.
