# Plan security for a new Windows RDP server

Prepare administrator access, updates, application permissions and backups for a self-managed Windows server.

## Treat administrator access as a responsibility

Use a strong unique password and protect the delivery mailbox and management account. Restrict who can reach the remote-access service and who can sign in. Keep a recovery path available before changing firewall rules.

## Check the selected Windows image

Choose a supported release that meets your application requirements and plan its updates. A catalogue entry does not by itself show that an older image still receives updates. Check licence rights for the operating system and installed applications.

## Separate access and capacity

Use named accounts with only the permissions required. Multi-user RDS application sessions require appropriate access licensing; plan resource capacity does not include those licences automatically.

## Keep a recovery plan

Back up data independently, document the configuration and test recovery before relying on it. An optional backup plan is useful but does not replace your own recoverable copy. A port change alone does not secure remote access.
